Garden landscaping and design in the Algarve

Gardens built for heat, wind and no rain

An Algarve garden has to survive six months without rain, limestone or schist soil, salty wind near the coast and water restrictions that get tighter every year. An English lawn with hydrangeas will not make it here without a fortune in water.

We build gardens that make sense in this climate: olives, carobs, lavender, rosemary, agaves, weevil-resistant palms, stone and gravel. Mediterranean garden or dry garden, with drip irrigation where it is needed and lawn only where it gets used. The result looks good all year with low upkeep and a low water bill.

We handle everything from ground preparation with a mini digger to planting and the irrigation system. On larger projects we work alongside landscape architects; on villa gardens we draw the plan with you on site.

Gardens built for heat, wind and no rain

What is included

  • Garden design

A site meeting, a simple plan with zones, plants and materials, and a quote in phases if you prefer.

  • Ground preparation

Clearing, earthworks with a mini digger, levelling, drainage and topsoil.

  • Planting

Trees, palms, shrubs and perennials suited to the Algarve, sourced from local nurseries.

  • Automatic irrigation

Drip and sprinkler systems with a timer and rain sensor. Water savings from the first month.

  • Natural and artificial grass

Turf or seeded lawn where it gets used, artificial grass where the water does not pay off.

  • Paths, gravel and finishes

Gravel, paving, edging, weed membrane, pine bark mulch and garden lighting.

When to call us

It makes sense to talk to us if:

  • You bought a house with a bare plot or a neglected garden
  • Your summer water bill keeps climbing
  • The lawn dies every August
  • You want a low-maintenance garden because you are not here all year
  • You rent to holidaymakers and need the outside to look the part
  • You have an old garden you want to refresh without ripping everything out

How the job runs

Four steps, with the price agreed before we start

  1. 01

    Visit and ideas

We look at the plot, the sun and wind exposure, the soil and the water available. We listen to what you want from the garden.

  2. 02

    Proposal

Zone plan, plant and material list and a quote. It can be phased over months.

  3. 03

    Construction

Preparation, irrigation, planting and finishes. One to three weeks for a typical villa garden.

  4. 04

    Handover and follow-up

We explain the irrigation and the upkeep. If you want, we maintain it afterwards.

What affects the price

The cost of building a garden depends on:

  • Area and the current state of the plot
  • Earthworks and drainage required
  • Plant sizes (a century-old olive and a young one are very different prices)
  • Area of natural or artificial grass
  • Irrigation: number of zones and automation
  • Paths, walls, stone and lighting

A Mediterranean garden with gravel and drip irrigation is almost always cheaper to build and far cheaper to keep than a large lawn. We quote in phases so you can start with the essentials.

Where we do this work

We build gardens in Silves, Lagoa, Carvoeiro, Portimão, Alvor, Albufeira, Lagos and Loulé. We know the difference between the limestone of the barrocal and the schist of the hills, and choose plants accordingly.

  • Lagoa
  • Portimão
  • Albufeira
  • Lagos
  • Monchique
  • Loulé
  • Faro
  • Vila do Bispo

Common questions

Answers before you call

How much does landscaping cost in the Algarve?
A small villa garden with gravel, a few plants and drip irrigation costs far less than a large lawn with walls and lighting. There is no per-square-metre price that fits everyone. We make a free visit and present a quote with options.
What is a Mediterranean garden?
A garden of plants from the Mediterranean basin and similar climates, adapted to a dry summer: olive, carob, lavender, rosemary, santolina, cistus, agaves and grasses. It uses stone, gravel and shade instead of lawn, and needs little water after the first year.
When is the best time to plant?
Autumn and early spring. Plants root with the rains before the heat arrives. We avoid planting in July and August unless irrigation is in place and the plants come in large pots.
Is artificial grass worth it?
In small, heavily used areas, around the pool or in rental properties, yes. In large or shaded areas, natural grass or a dry garden are better choices. We tell you what makes sense in your case.
Do you maintain the garden afterwards?
Yes. Many clients stay with us on a monthly or fortnightly garden maintenance plan. For owners who live abroad we send photos after every visit.
